FORT PIERCE

DSC_3372

Often called "Sunrise City," Fort Pierce is on the Treasure Coast, stretching from St. Lucie Inlet to Sebastian Inlet along Florida's Atlantic coast. Harlem Renaissance writer, folklorist and anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston relocated to Fort Pierce in 1957 where she lived in a tiny 2-bedroom house, rent-free, courtesy of Dr. C.C. Benton, a physician and family friend from Eatonville. This was Hurston’s home from 1957 to 1960 when she died. It was here that she wrote for the Ft Pierce Chronicle, a black weekly, and worked on her unfinished book, Herod the Great.
